Michael Shelton has a Masters Degree in clinical psychology, is licensed to work with appetitive disorders (i.e., weight, sex, alcohol abuse, gambling, etc.), and is a certified physical fitness trainer. He has been specificially trained in clinical hypnosis, neurolinguistic programming, and cognitive-bahavioral therapy.
Michael is the author of the very first book on leadership development purposefully developed for the camping industry: Coaching the Camp Coach. In addition, his second book, Secret Encounters, explored the challenges of managing human sexuality in camps. Due to his ongoing work for the industry, Michael was asked to be a national spokesperson for the American Camp Association. He is also a frequent contributor to Camping Magazine, the trade journal of the camping industry. He won the prestigious ACA Golden Quill Award in 2001 for an article on camp management. He continues to speak across the country on issues of camp professionalism and development. Michael has first-hand knowledge of the challenges that face camp leaders as he is the director of a residential camp in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Finally, he is the head researcher on a federally funded program examining the effects of camp employment on leadership development.
In addition to his camp work, Michael has been a practicing therapist for the past fifteen years and continues to work with clients on a myriad of personal development issues.
